The Four Inch Rule

  1. Exodus 21:12-13 He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.

  2. And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver [him] into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee.

  3. But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbor, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.

In many Bibles the distance between Exodus 20:13 (Thou shalt not kill.) and Exodus 21:12-13 (He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.) is often only about four inches.

Those who oppose capital punishment can see only Exodus 20:13, but can not see Exodus 21:12.
