   This is a short story about the passion based upon the Gospels and historical documents. As you read, pretend that you are watching a movie. In addition to the Bible these history books were used.

The story you have been told about the passion is basically;

    Baloney! What really happened actually took forty two hours.

Jesus Is Arrested

    It was about midnight. After Jesus and his apostles had finished the Passover meal, they went over the brook Cedron and into a garden. Judas had left in the middle of the meal. He went to the chief priests, scribes and elders of the Jewish people. They had for a long time desired to take Jesus and kill him. But they feared to make a public arrest. Jesus was very popular and usually surrounded by supporters. They feared public opinion and that the people might riot to protect Jesus.

    Judas offered them a chance to take him secretly. Judas knew that Jesus would be alone in the garden. The authorities were glad to pay thirty pieces of silver to know when Jesus would be alone. To make the arrest, the Jews sent Judas with a band of heavily armed men and officers.

    As the Jews approached the garden with weapons, torches and lanterns, Judas said to the band, "Whomsoever I shall kiss, that's Him, don't let him get away!"

    Jesus watched them approach. He saw Judas leading the way. Because Jesus knew in advance all that would happen, he said to his apostles, "Get up, the betrayer is coming." As Jesus walked toward them, Judas arrived calling out, "Master, master, hail master." Jesus greeted Judas with, "Friend, why did you come?" Judas didn't answer, instead he kissed Jesus. Then Jesus said to Judas, "Judas, betrayest thou the son of man with a kiss?"

    Jesus greeted the band of Jews by asking assertively, "Who are you looking for?" They answered, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus answered, "I AM" and took one step forward. Jesus' words and action intimidated the leader of the Jews who stepped backward and stumbled bumping into his fellows. They all fell to the ground. As they picked themselves up Jesus again asked, "Whom do you seek?" Again they answered, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus replied, "I have told you that I AM. So if I'm the one you are looking for, let these, my followers alone." He said this that the prophecy might be fulfilled, Of them which Thou gavest Me have I lost none. So the Jewish band laid hands on Christ to take Him.

    But, His followers did not understand what was said, for they knew the Jews wanted to kill Jesus. Fearing for Jesus' life the disciples asked, "Lord, shall we smite them with the sword?" Peter didn't wait for an answer. He quickly drew his sword, and swinging, cut off the right ear of Malchus the high priest's servant. Immediately Jesus called out, "Stop, that's enough! . . . Peter, put your sword away. For all they who take the sword shall perish with the sword. The cup that my Father has given Me, shall I not drink of it? Besides, don't you know that I can ask the Father and immediately he would give me at least 10,000 angels. Peter, the scriptures must be fulfilled, do it my way." As Christ spoke these words he touched Malchus' ear and healed it.

    Then Jesus turned to the chief priests and captains of the temple and said, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if you were in pursuit of a thief? I sat daily in your presence in the temple teaching. You did not attempt to arrest me. But that the scripture be fulfilled, this is your hour and the hour of the power of darkness. This is the way it must be."

    So the Jews took him. As they were tying his hands the disciples fled. One of the Jews grabbed Luke by his robe. The cloth ripped. Luke fled naked.

At Annas Palace

    They took Jesus first to Annas' palace. Annas was the father in law of Caiaphas, the High Priest. Caiaphas was the one who counseled the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. So he and they had made plans to take Jesus by subtlety and kill him. Annas had Jesus taken to Caiaphas' palace. There others were assembled and waiting. 

At Caiaphas' Palace

    Peter and John followed them to Caiaphas' palace. Because John was known by the high priest, was allowed to go inside with Jesus. Peter waited outside.

The Trial Before The Sanhedrin

    The chief priests, elders and scribes were all assembled and waiting for Jesus at Caiaphas' palace. They were anxious to get started. As soon as Annas and the band arrived, the Sanhedrin was called to order.

    The Sanhedrin then sat in judgment on Jesus. Annas, the High Priest, began by asking Jesus about His disciples and doctrine. Jesus answered. "I spoke openly in public, the synagogue and the temple. You people were always listening. In secret I have said nothing. So why ask Me, you wouldn't believe Me anyway. Ask them that heard Me, behold they know what I have said."

    One of the elders slapped Jesus saying, "Answerest the High Priest so?" Jesus replied, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness to the evil, but if well, why strike Me?"

Then Caiaphas said, "O.K. . ., we will ask the witnesses." So they called for a brief recess to find witness. The chief priests, elders and all the counsel sought witness. Many false witness were available but none who had reputation enough to be believed in court. At last they found two who said, "He said, I am able to destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands." The other witness said, he said, "I am able to destroy the temple of God, and rebuild it in three days." But this and other testimony did not agree in details.

    The high priest arose and said to Jesus, "Don't you have anything to say about this testimony against you?" Jesus stood silent before the court. His silence so angered the Jews that they spit in His face, buffeted and struck Him. One covered His eyes while another slapped His face saying, "Tell us, thou Christ, who struck you?" Jesus remained silent.

    Peter's First Of Three Denials

    While Christ was before the Sanhedrin, Peter waited outside. During the recess to find witness, John went to the door and spoke to the doorkeeper saying, "Could my friend come in?"

    Peter was allowed in. In the hall he sat with the servants and officers by a fireplace. One of the High Priest's maids walked by. She stopped and stared at Peter, then said, "You were with Jesus the Galilean from Nazareth, weren't you?" Peter replied. "I don't know what you are talking about. I don't know him." The doorkeeper, hearing these words and wondering if she had let in the wrong person asked, "Are you one of this man's disciples?" Peter answered, "No I am not." 

    The group, warming themselves about the fire, was now standing. They began to talk among themselves and said to Peter, "We remember you, surely you are one of His disciples!" Then a relative of Malchus, whose ear was cut off earlier, said, "I saw you in the garden with Him, didn't I? You must be one of His disciples!" Peter walked away angrily saying, "I am not!" As he went out unto the porch, the cock crowed the first time.

    Peter stood on the porch. He stared at the sky. A full moon was just about to set. As he stared into the sky, he recalled that, 1500 years earlier, that very night, in Egypt, his ancestor's kept their first Passover. About this time that night the death angel, like a thief in the night, passed through the land of Egypt killing all the first born of Egypt. Tomorrow was an annual holiday commemorating the Exodus of Israel out of Egypt. That exodus began at noon this coming day so long ago. Freedom from bondage to Egypt. We looked forward to Jesus freeing us from bondage to sin on this very day. How can that be? Peter asked himself.

    Suddenly Peter's train of thought was broken. Another maid noticed Peter and exclaimed, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth! This is one of them!" An officer turned to Peter asking, "Is it true! Are you one of them? Are you one of His disciples?" Peter, caught unaware replied, "Man, I am not. I swear, I do not know the man." 

Meanwhile Back Inside

    The High Priest angrily said, "By God! tell us, are you the Christ, the son of God?" Jesus broke His silence and said, "You know that I AM, you said so. Hereafter you will see the son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." The High Priest wanted a Yes or No answer so, angrily, he asked again, "Are you the Christ, the son of the Blessed?" Jesus replied, "Yes, I AM, and you Jews shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven."

    In fury Ciaiphas, the High Priest, tore his clothes yelling, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witness? Behold, now we've got Him! You have all heard His blasphemy! What do you think?" Except for Nichodenmus, they all agreed that he was guilty of death.

    About One Hour Later, as the first rays of the sun shown, another officer said to Peter, "I have been listening to you, surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean. Your speech gives you away." Another affirmed, "It's true, this fellow was with Him, for Jesus is a Galilean."

    Peter, frustrated, cried out, "Man, I told you, I don't know what you are talking about! I don't know this Jesus that you keep talking about!" As Peter was speaking he did not notice that Jesus was passing near by. Jesus was being led to the council room. Peter turned, as their eyes touched, Peter remembered the words of his Lord, "Before the cock crowed, thou shalt deny Me thrice." And immediately the cock crowed again. It was now sunrise, Peter fled the porch and wept bitterly.
